Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about a deeply emotional experience that pushed her to seek therapy for the first time.
In a candid interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the Battle on Buka Street star revealed how she was emotionally devastated after being mocked by women for not having a husband during her 2023 political campaign.
Funke, who ran as the Deputy Governorship candidate for Lagos State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), shared that while her political ambition brought her into the spotlight, it also exposed her to harsh and hurtful criticism that left a lasting impact.
“There was one video I watched where women were mocking me for not having a husband, and I want to do politics. I broke down and cried. I told myself I needed to speak to a therapist, and I felt better,” she revealed during the interview.
Akindele admitted that although she had always recognized the importance of therapy, she avoided it for years out of fear of gossip and public judgment.
“Right from the scratch, I’ve always known that therapy was important, but never submitted to it because I didn’t want them to carry my gist. I kept acting strong while they were throwing everything at me,” she added.
The actress, known for consistently shattering box office records in Nigeria, urged those facing emotional struggles not to suffer in silence but to seek help and speak up.
“I want to advise you out there that it is very important to speak up,” she concluded.
