Veteran Nigerian actress and university lecturer, Professor Joke Muyiwa, has candidly shared insights into her career journey, family life, and the realities of working in Nollywood. In a recent interview with Oyinmomo TV, the celebrated actress reflected on her unique path in the entertainment industry and academia.
Known for her impressive performances on screen and her role as a lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts, Prof. Muyiwa revealed that despite her long-standing career, she has only produced one film.
“I’ve only produced one movie because producing isn’t a necessity. Some of us are more passionate about acting than producing—it all depends on where your interest lies,” she explained.
Prof. Muyiwa also challenged the popular belief that every successful actor must eventually transition into producing. She emphasized that fulfillment in the arts comes from following one’s passion, whether that’s performing or working behind the scenes.
“Whatever you set your mind to, that’s what you will achieve,” she noted, underlining the importance of self-awareness, personal goals, and staying true to one’s calling
She further noted that acting and teaching have always grounded her in discipline and values. “Acting and teaching didn’t permit us to engage in bad behavior. Acting is about showcasing the good in the society, so we must continue doing that and avoid bad habits,” she explained.
Prof. Muyiwa’s reflections serve as a powerful reminder that success in the creative arts is not one-size-fits-all. Her dedication to acting and mentoring young talents reflects a commitment to purpose over trend, and passion over pressure.
