Award-winning filmmaker and Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has opened up about one of the most emotionally challenging periods of her life, revealing how she struggled to stay strong while dealing with a series of personal setbacks.
In a candid interview with WithChude, the actress shared how the loss of her mother, the collapse of her marriage, and the disappointment from her political ambition took a heavy toll on her emotionally and mentally.
“I don’t like to mourn. When my mum passed, I just wanted to move on quickly,” she said. “I try to get out of situations fast and avoid breaking down, but after my mum’s death, it caught up with me. I almost died — my heart was aching.”
Funke also spoke about raising her twins alone during that difficult period, emphasizing how much she bottled up inside just to keep going. Her honesty has resonated deeply with fans, who admire her strength and resilience.
She further described how an online controversy pushed her to the edge. “Something happened online and for the first time, I took my phone and went live and said, ‘You all should leave me alone, I don’t know about this stuff. This person came to act in my movie, got paid and left. Why are you accusing me of something I didn’t do wrong? Do you know what I’m going through?’”
Akindele didn’t hold back in expressing the weight of the challenges she has endured. “I lost my mom, I lost my marriage, I lost in politics and I had to get back to work to earn a living. I have children I’m raising alone and you are stressing me. For the first time, I cried. I broke down for weeks. I was alone and I refused to eat.”
